About

ABOUT TWERKSCHOLARS

Twerk Scholars was born out of a lesson in Black Feminism in 2013, rooted in the belief that Twerking is Empowering form of dance. Our mission is to boost freedom, joy, self-confidence, and feminine energy through the movement of the hips. We provide a safe, judgment-free space where every body is celebrated and encouraged to embrace the jiggle.

After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, our founder Kimari expanded her research thesis beyond the classroom, traveling across the United States to conduct a qualitative fieldwork study exploring the spaces where women make a living through twerking and documenting how twerking has served as a tool to uplift dancers economically, socially, and politically.

Our CEO Sunshine has led classes in Dallas, building a vibrant local community while keeping the heart of Twerk Scholars alive. Together, we’ve grown and influenced an international movement that offers classes, private lessons, and parties — perfect for Ladies’ Night, Bachelorettes, Birthdays, and more.

Beyond the dance floor, Twerk Scholars is also a voice in academia and culture. We have been honored to guest speak and lecture at conferences, summits, and university seminars — from Black Studies to Women’s & Gender Studies programs — bringing our research and practice into critical conversations about cultural history feminism, embodiment, and empowerment.

Today, Twerk Scholars continues to bridge scholarship, community, theory and practice — creating & acknowledging spaces where hips move freely, confidence rises, culture is respected and empowerment is always at the center.
